3D models of the head.

Master portraiture by first drawing simplified 3D models of the human head!

The Head-block.

Start here. This is the most basic 3D model of a human head.

Use this for understanding a head in perspective.

Any object, including a head, may fit inside a cube. A cube, is the simplest expression of the x, y & z axis.

“If you can draw a head-block, you can draw a head.”

The Ball-Wedge.

For intermediate learners.

Use this to understand what 3D form a head actually is.

We see the side planes of the head while the model faces frontwards because a human head is wider in the back, and more narrow in the front.

Major axis lines evenly divide the head in two.

The eyes are located on the horizontal major axis. The horizontal major axis continues to the side plane, where the ears attach.

The vertical major axis runs along the center of the face, and note how it becomes smaller when we rotate the model left & right.

The major axis lines shift & bow simultaneously when we rotate or tilt the model, & the features along with them.

Planar Head

Advanced mode activate.

This model allows you to understand the minor planes of the head & the major planes of features.

Can you see how the other models build up to this? To draw this accurately, begin with a head-block, add the ball-wedge, and complete with the more nuanced planes here.

Keep rotating, keep tilting, keep practicing. You’ve got this!
