Everything You’ll Learn in Class.

Salutations, friend -

Art concepts you should avoid like the plague as a beginner:

  • Color

  • Anatomy

  • Style

Sure, these are flashy and interesting - but advanced concepts don’t make for a good foundation (only frustration and burnout). Like music, first the notes, then Twinkle Little Little Star, and much later, Chopin’s Étude Op.10 No.4 🎵

So, where should you start?

Consider this,

Your Drawing 101 Syllabus.

  1. ✍️ Fundamental Drawing

    • 2D spatial awareness of size, angle location, and proportion. First principles about how light & shadow interacts with objects. And some basic 3D spatial awareness, particularly around cubes (the simplest expression of the x, y, & z axis).

  2. 💪 Kinesthetics & Media

    • Know the proper way to hold a pencil, the technique of mark making, and the nature of the materials you’re using too.

  3. 🧍 Subject Matter

    • Let’s face it you’re probably gonna want to know how to draw people (or people like things). So we put an emphasis on portraiture, figure drawing, hands, and hair. We also mix in other subject matter like vehicles, buildings, dragons, etcetera.

  4. 🦄 Imaginative Illustration

    • The one we all love. Drawing anime, character design, creating your own original masterworks. Fundamentals, after all, without application is useless; connecting the dots as a beginner solidifies your understanding of why we practice what we practice.

  5. 🧠 Psychology

    • Essential, though often overlooked. For any kind of longterm success, the way you think about drawing must be accounted for. We develop growth mindsets, cultivate passion, and overcome perfectionism.

All students who graduate our group class, Drawing 101, are proficient in these concepts. Advance skills are mastered in in our private lessons.

Just remember - start small and work your way up. You got this 💃
