Part 2: Journey to Art Mastery Mountain.

2D Shape

Human vision prioritizes silhouettes first.

Big shapes are not only easier to learn, but more important too!

Area.

These Drawmon come in all sorts of heights & widths.

By using a simple square, we can see how vastly different they actually are!

Contour.

“Contour” refers to each unique, specific, adorable silhouette ~

Flat shapes allow us to isolate the x & y axis before adding the z axis.

Math is neat!

Light.

That apple has some complicated light & shadow stuff goin’ on -

but hold your pencils - a simplified 2D shape is still the foundation.

Let’s keep climbing with,

3D Form

Drawing realism is taking a 2D surface, and tricking your brain into believing that it’s 3D. There are simple, systematic building blocks we use to achieve this effect.

Notably,

Perspective.

Remember this:

Everything is a more complicated cube.

And if you can draw a cube - you can draw anything.

Light.

But now, in the 3rd dimension.

Learn the parts of light - both the, “what,” and the “why.”

Such as for cast shadows; These bad boys occur when light is blocked by an object. What’s leftover, is a shadow in the shape of the object in question.

So they’re not even cast at all. We might as well call them “blocked shadows!”

Hah. Little art humor for you.

Was that useful?

Subject Specific, & Creative Illustration are up next, on the road to Art Mastery Mountain!

Subject Specific

Humans, landscapes, and clothing, might be a few things that frequently recur as a focus of your artwork.

Bolster your foundational skills by memorizing their idiosyncratic rules of thumb.

For example,

Humans, on average, are about 8 heads tall.

Under ‘natural’ lighting conditions, the night sky is brighter than foreground objects.

Fabric aggregates towards “tension points” in triangular patterns.

Creative Illustration

Illustration, is at the intersection of art & storytelling.

It includes both narrative, & design.

A pretty drawing of an apple might be impressive, an abstract paint splatter could evoke an emotion, but an illustration with an intentional narrative contains meaning & depth.

Composition, color harmony, and style ~ make for good design.

Now, let’s take a birds eye view to see how these concepts all fit together -

Part 3: Culmination of the Summit.

The journey to Art Mastery Mountain is a long and tricky road.

Having a plan - a roadmap, can save you a lot of frustration and wasted effort.

Really, it’s simple.

Begin with what’s achievable,

and keep moving forwards.

But unlike a straightforward journey,

each step is cumulative;

And even the most advanced artists benefit from the journey’s beginning.

Because once you “master” one, you realize,

you have so far to go.

But in our humble opinion,

that’s the best part.
